My name is Eunice Joseph. I was born and raised in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. I’m a porter at Thomson Safaris, and I really love my job!

What do you like about your job?

Being a porter is important to me for several reasons. It has helped me support my family financially as well as the people around me. And secondly, it’s helped me achieve my personal goals of financial independence.

Last but not least, it’s helped me support the trekkers achieving their dream goal of making it to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, which is my home.

Why Did You Become a Porter?

I became a porter because I was excited about the opportunity to work on the mountain, as well as achieve my personal goals of financial independence that I’ve been dreaming of since I was a kid.

Do you have any memorable moments from the job?

Yes, I have many of them. But just to point to one, it was last year we had a women’s trekking group. They were 50 years old and above. Most of them were very committed to keeping the group healthy and protecting the environment. I learned a lot of things from them.

They gave me so much encouragement to not only be welcoming, but to help people feel like they are part of a community.

I really loved it.
