Our Story

A Legacy Born in East Africa

Judi Wineland and Rick Thomson, hailing from the U.S. and New Zealand respectively, crossed paths in East Africa over forty years ago, and the rest is history. Devoted to Tanzania and only Tanzania, the Wineland-Thomson family founded Thomson Safaris in 1981 to explore the country’s wondrous wilderness, from the plains of the Serengeti to the peaks of Kilimanjaro.

A Family Endeavor

As a small, family-founded company, Thomson Safaris takes a deeply personal approach to every trekker, treating each guest as though they were part of the family. For founders Rick and Judi and their two daughters, Kilimanjaro is not just a destination—it’s a cherished part of their lives. Having all summited the mountain themselves, they understand the profound, life-changing experience of reaching the peak. Their daughter Nicole even made history as the youngest person to climb Kilimanjaro at the time, a testament to the family’s enduring connection to Africa’s tallest mountain.

Powered by Great People

Thomson’s commitment extends beyond its guests to the dedicated guides and porters who make each climb possible. Recognizing the critical role these team members play, Thomson ensures they are treated with the utmost respect and care. From fair wages and proper equipment to providing opportunities for professional growth, we strive to support our staff as much as our trekkers. This sense of community and responsibility is woven into every aspect of our operations.

Committed to Tanzania
