I climbed Kilimanjaro this past December followed by a trip in Zanzibar. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity where I felt safe and well informed. Thomson provides a comprehensive overview of the Kilimanjaro trek including how to prepare and what to bring for the climb. I took full advantage of this including renting most of the large equipment to prevent any occurrences of lost luggage. The guides, porters, and staff were all very professional and ensured 100% success climb rate for the group. On a personal note, I’d highly recommend investing in a personal porter. Abdul helped me manage my equipment and ensured my successful climb. One of the biggest challenges some people experienced was they trained but they didn’t train carrying the additional 4-5 liters of water required for hydration. In addition, hiring the personal porter provided Abdul with a job so he can support his friends and family. One important factor was there was a certified medic in addition to the lead guide to offer consultation if needed. We did the traditional route where we trekked up for 7 days and then two days down. It was truly a mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually challenging journey but well worth it. I can say with confidence after the 9th day on the mountain I was ready for amenities. It was truly a luxury experience as the porters and the camp chef made sure we had a comfortable experience. The food was amazing and shockingly delicious and definitely wasn’t your typical “camp food”. Each meal had two or three courses including a soup, appetizers, and a main course. Some meals were not as extravagant given the location of the camp and supplies. Overall it was amazing! Do not skip out on the price! Pay the money it’s worth it, you won’t regret it.

Finally the team at Thomson are fantastic and attentive throughout the process. From the initial planning, to the actual trek, and the post trip requests for feedback. Angela is a true godsend and you’ll be lucky to work with her if applicable.

Everything about our trek was fantastic. The entire staff of porters, guides and cooks were amazing in every way. I could not have asked for a better adventure. The entire trip was well planned and ran like clockwork. I have dietary issues, and I am a very picky eater. They did a wonderful job of providing for me. I remember the staff as much as I do all of the sites and experiences.

Thomson Safaris/Treks is my trusted company and trek operator when taking a trip to Tanzania to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. As a new/ first-time treker in August 2024, I went with Thomson after lots of research. I choose the Western Approach Trek, with 9 days for a good chance of summiting. Their US team were very insightful, and knowledgeable. The Thomson staff I had spoken to all had summited Kilimanjaro themselves. So you really get first hand knowledge from them. Ask them anything. Route best for you, food, camping, gear, bathrooms on the mountain etc they will give you any information you need. They are very prompt on their email responses also. I chose Thomson, and it was the greatest decision. Everything was taken care of. If you want an extra hotel night, a Safari trip before/after Kilimanjaro, stop in Zanzibar for R&R after Kili, tell them and they will make your dream itinerary happen for you. I could go on and on. The proof of my review of Thomson? Im already planing my second trip to summit Kilimanjaro on the Umbwe route in September 2026 with Thomson!

The Thomson organization does an excellent job. Extraordinarily well organized. On a Kilimanjaro trek this year, we were a group of seven and had 56 porters, eight to one. They broke camp every morning after we started to hike, had next camp set up by the time we got there in the afternoon. Three hot meals a day, and the food was great. Hot tea and snacks in the afternoon (British heritage). Our lead porter was first named Godlove, seriously, and he was spectacular. I am 71, he recognized me as the weak member of our herd, was by my side the entire trek, made sure he had my arm on difficult spots so I would not fall. I am so grateful to him. Again, I am 71, have a hip replacement, and I made the Summit with the help of Godlove and his team. I recommend Thomson without reservation. Larry Carlson, Summit February 2025.
