Giving Back

Committed to Tanzania

Operating in Tanzania for over 40 years, we’ve built deep connections with the country that has given us so much. That’s why we’re dedicated to giving back, both on Kilimanjaro and across Tanzania. From supporting porters with ethical treatment and fair wages to investing in community-driven initiatives through our philanthropic efforts, we strive to improve the lives of Tanzanians every day.

The Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project

Thomson Treks is proud to be a founding member of the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP), setting the standard for ethical treatment of porters on the mountain. KPAP ensures porters receive fair wages and offers training to help them advance their careers, improving their livelihoods. Beyond our own practices, we help elevate ethical standards across the industry and match guest donations to KPAP with an additional $20 contribution, ensuring lasting impact for the mountain’s dedicated workforce.

Focusing on Tanzanian Communities

In 1996, Thomson owner Judi Wineland partnered with a group of former guests to establish Focus on Tanzanian Communities (FOTZC), a philanthropic organization that prioritizes education, women’s empowerment, and healthcare, selecting projects based on the communities’ own identified needs. To date, over $1.3 million has been invested in rural Tanzanian communities, funding initiatives like building schools and medical facilities, offering entrepreneurship training, and providing food aid during famines.
